Greedy men turn into rats, a demon causes the usual trouble, a witch wants to possess the body of her young cousin; and a cruel boss is haunted by the ghost of an employee (this at least provides for a lot of zombie action scenes).<br \/>\nThese stories have (apart from the artwork!) no \u201cpersonality\u201d, no special touch (like the yarns of many other companies had!). <strong>Maybe the name \u201cStandard\u201d is working like a curse here<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Strange text story (\u201cNight Of Horror\u201d) in this issue: A man walks unsuspectingly into a Black Mass, held in a church in Nuremberg, Germany. The man is not bothered by this, though. What can go wrong writing about an eerie doctor running a snake farm?!<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2010\/07\/ugliest-man-in-world-hades-highway.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Ugliest Man In The World<\/a>\u201d is a bit of a classic: Illogical, but deeply disturbing story about an actor whose face gets horribly disfigured. See it posted as a &#8222;double feature&#8220; on Karswell&#8217;s fantastic blog &#8222;The Horrors Of It All&#8220;.<br \/>\nKatz\u2019s artwork is crude, but most effective \u2013 and the two final pages reveling in the man\u2019s sheer despair are unparalleled in horror comics history.<\/p>\n<p>Quite fun stuff now! With Standard, they chose to add two more panels for a \u201chappy\u201d ending.<br \/>\n<em>Karswell posted the newly colored reprint version.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201eThe Man In The Mirror\u201c <strong>lacks impact, because it refrains from depicting blood and guts<\/strong>. Just a cop TELLING us about a man gone to pieces and only DEPICTING some shards of glass does not make the readers\u2019 day, folks.<br \/>\nOddly, this story would have been fun if there were strewn in at least three panels of gratuitous violence. More oddly, Mastroserio excelled at that in his collaboration with Lou Cameron for the Ace horror books. Was there a \u201cStandard house rule\u201d at work, opposing show of blood and violence?<br \/>\n(should have tried THAT at Harvey\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Fawcett veteran and ACG horror artist Charles Sultan contributes his second (and last) Standard job. I wonder if this is Celardo; or Celardo inking Crandall even? The man sure looks like a Crandall pencil drawing. I like a wild guess now and then\u2026<\/p>\n<p>One of Standard\u2019s best known horror books &#8211;\u00a0 because of the <strong>Reed Crandall double feature<\/strong>. This is Crandall\u2019s only appearance in Standard horror. Both stories are no solo jobs and coincide with his debut for EC\u2019s SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES #9 (\u201cCarrion Death\u201d). I consider \u201cCarrion Death\u201d a true horror masterpiece \u2013 and so is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2007\/08\/corpse-that-came-to-dinner.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Corpse That Came To Dinner<\/a>\u201d. For the first seven of its eight pages\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2007\/08\/corpse-that-came-to-dinner.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-696\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-696\" title=\"Dinnercorp\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Dinnercorp-204x300.jpg\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Dinnercorp-204x300.jpg 204w, https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Dinnercorp-696x1024.jpg 696w, https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Dinnercorp.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a>A brilliant exposition and splash (no one draws frightened faces better than Crandall!) is followed by a highly original, truly shocking and suspense-filled nightmare of a young couple. Only on the last page they go for a twist which is annoying beyond belief. The corpse is in reality no corpse, but a prankster using make-up to look like one?!<br \/>\nThat goes unnoticed \u2013 for days? Please. <strong>The ending fouls up the story<\/strong> (no pun intended).<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2010\/07\/till-death-do-us-part-x2.html\" target=\"_blank\">Till Death Do Us Part<\/a>\u201d (the next issue of SHADOWS will present another story with the exact same title, by the way) is unusual in its construction. The first and last page are used for explanations, but the four pages between are pure cinematic action. Unhindered by balloons, Nick Cardy is allowed to wallow in gorgeous pictures. The forced twist is quite unnecessary and sadistic as well.<\/p>\n<p>This issue\u2019s third long story, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2008\/04\/hanged-by-neck.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hanged By The Neck<\/a>\u201d, is satisfactory. Nick Cardy\u2019s beautiful lead story ends with a killer genie turning on his master \u2013 just because they hassle about words and phrasings. Aarrrgghh.<\/p>\n<p>Strangely off balance is the writing again in \u201c\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2010\/07\/till-death-do-us-part-x2.html\" target=\"_blank\">Til Death Do Us Part<\/a>\u201d: the story about a husband being dominated by his cruel wife gets mixed up with a ghost mystery about two sisters living in seclusion. The plot has its moments, but is brought hastily to an overly violent end. Why is the man burning? Couldn\u2019t he just have gone mad? Can only shake my head here.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s another Aarrgghh for \u201cRevenge Of The Little People\u201d. What\u2019s with these midget ghosts? Where do they suddenly come from? Why can ghosts manipulate solid objects? Probably a joint effort.<br \/>\nSo, let\u2019s brace ourself for the stories:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFountain Of Fear\u201d surprises. A brutal escaped murderer, the fountain of youth and a nice twist make for a good and tough lead story. There remains only one question: To what state please does evil Gil Lansing exactly regress?! Not embryonic, as the picture shows. Hmmm. Never mind, it\u2019s a gripping and moving yarn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2008\/11\/coin-of-evil-mask-of-graffenwehr.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Coin Of Evil<\/a>\u201d is yet another variation of the horror story classic \u201cThe Monkey\u2019s Paw\u201d by William Wymark Jacobs, first published in 1902. Wishes come true, but with terrible consequences. There are some horror comic versions around. \u201cThe Coin Of Evil\u201d is the best one I know of. Cardy\u2019s artwork is very Toth-like and shows us moving everyday characters struck by tragedy.<br \/>\nHigh drama. <strong>I\u2019ve seldomly been touched more by a comic book story!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Prophecy\u201d is a rather weak piece and not one of Jack Katz\u2019 good jobs (I wonder if he\u2019s inked by Roussos here?). But it\u2019s a straight four-pager and we\u2019ll let it go.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/highest-standard.de\/out-of-the-shadows\/attachment\/ariablood2detail\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-702\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-702\" title=\"AriaBlood2Detail\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/AriaBlood2Detail.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/AriaBlood2Detail.jpg 600w, https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/AriaBlood2Detail-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a>A most nonsensical final panel haunts the two-pager \u201cAria In Blood\u201d. The voiceless singer going \u201cCroak! Croak!\u201d like a parrot on ecstasy.<\/p>\n<p>Would have been much better without that \u201csound effect\u201d\u2026<br \/>\nThere\u2019s even a pun here, as I just noticed:<br \/>\nOne of the singers croaks, the other as well! Hehehe.<\/p>\n<p>And so we come to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2008\/11\/wig-retribution.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Wig<\/a>\u201d, a story I\u2019m just crazy about. I love those zany horror stories, where the impossible happens. Here it is a toupee strangling (on its own, don\u2019t know how!) the hairdresser who killed the man to whom the hair belonged.<br \/>\nHair actively committing murder gets my attention every time. And Standard did another one of these killer hair tales (\u201cThe Fatal Strands\u201d in DARKNESS #8, see there).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Wig\u201d even exists in two versions<\/strong>. One from Standard (follow the link to read it online) and one from Fawcett, posted on my German website, see it <a href=\"http:\/\/fifties-horror.de\/lesewiese\/the-bad\/the-wig-fawcett\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>.<br \/>\nOne clever writer cashed in twice there. Feel free to compare!<\/p>\n<p>Conclusion: SHADOWS #11 is a strange issue. The writing is enormously diverse, ranging from touching tragedy to whacky comedy. Art-wise not one of the highlights, but wonderfully colorful. It will be their last contribution to Standard\u2019s horror line as well.<br \/>\n<strong>Exit Jack Katz as well<\/strong>, swinging over to Atlas war and horror.<\/p>\n<p>Bit of a mystery why they didn\u2019t chose the gorgeous looking \u201cImages Of Sand\u201d as lead story&#8230;<br \/>\nBut let us start at the beginning:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHand Of Death\u201d is one of those many stories about detached hands. This is a bad one, about a matador\u2019s skills he obtains from a witch. They hassle quite childishly about money, and a hand gets detached, then attached again, then more money problems. <strong>Shameful, one-dimensional writing<\/strong> \u2013 still at home at Standard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/fifties-horror.de\/lesewiese\/the-good\/the-man-who-was-always-on-time\" target=\"_blank\">The Man Who Was Always On Time<\/a>\u201d (posted on &#8222;Fifties Horror!&#8220;) is run of the mill, but offers an interesting topic (clock collectors) and nice touches (the punctuality tic, underlying spousal tension). Even the twist is okay \u2013 poetic justice at its best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImages Of Sand\u201d is one of Toth\u2019s best horror jobs and an all-time classic. Mind you: Even this is standard fare, but just too beautiful to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s a wrap with \u201cKill Happy\u201d, a Katz crime contribution. It is indeed a thoroughbred crime story of a long 8 pages. Don\u2019t know how this ended up here. Seems to be no leftover story from a Standard crime comic book. Their tentative excursions into crime were limited to the year 1952. It\u2019s wonderful artwork by Jack Katz, but doesn\u2019t really fit in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comics.org\/issue\/244835\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>OUT OF THE SHADOWS #13<\/strong><\/a><strong><br \/>\nMay 1954<br \/>\nCover: (Giant red hand lowering knife-wielding marionette above victim) \u2013 George Roussos <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Fearful Night\u201d (Mike Sekowsky + Mike Peppe)<strong><\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cThe Recluse\u201d (Rocco Mastroserio + ?)<br \/>\n\u201cThe Cannibal!\u201d (???)<br \/>\n\u201cGallery Of Horror\u201d (Gene Fawcette) \u2013 half-pager after advertising<br \/>\n\u201cMan From The Grave\u201d (Gene Fawcette) \u2013 half-pager after advertising<br \/>\n\u201cChilly Chuckles\u201d (???) \u2013 half-pager (funny feature) after advertising<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t Look Behind\u201d (Mike Sekowsky + Mike Peppe \/ Nick Cardy ?)<\/p>\n<p>This is a Sekowsky issue. Two long stories inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fifties-horror.de\/lesewiese\/the-good\/the-cannibal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-706\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-706 alignright\" title=\"Cannibal1\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Cannibal1-203x300.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Cannibal1-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Cannibal1-693x1024.jpg 693w, https:\/\/highest-standard.de\/filecollection\/sites\/3\/2012\/11\/Cannibal1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a>Incidentally, all of the stories are posted on a blog dedicated to the products of the Standard company (aka Nedor). Thus the blog is called &#8222;<strong>Nedor-A-Day<\/strong>&#8222;. But the blogger just published these four horror tales (and the first one from Toth, to be precise). Follow the links to get there. Have a look around if you\u2019re interested in other genres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/nedor-a-day.blogspot.de\/2008\/10\/fearful-night.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Fearful Night<\/a>\u201d stages a drama about a vagabond in the Carpathian mountains falling prey to a band of wicked witches. Stephan has to shed blood to break the spell, but is doomed for eternity anyway. A very literary account of guilt and damnation, but clearly lacks a zest for horror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/nedor-a-day.blogspot.de\/2008\/10\/recluse.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Recluse<\/a>\u201d is a crudity, adequately drawn by Rocco Mastroserio. The story picks plot elements from different formula stories and tries to piece together a whole new puzzle. They almost succeed, but the twist ends up in smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Mystery artwork in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/nedor-a-day.blogspot.de\/2008\/10\/cannibal.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Cannibal!<\/a>\u201d. No one dared put a name to these pages. I won\u2019t do either. It is irritating, indeed. There is this \u201chouse style\u201d feeling; instinctively you think of Mastroserio, Saaf or even Cardy \u2013 but looking closer, nothing fits. This may be an elaborate swipe job, executed by an uncredited guest artist.<br \/>\n<strong>Postcript December 2012:<\/strong> Dutch art spotter Ger Apeldoorn reports: &#8222;To me <em>The Cannibal<\/em> has definite signs of Reed Crandall&#8220;. Interesting guess. <em>Bedankt, mijnheer.<\/em> The style doesn&#8217;t strike you as Crandall&#8217;s, but if you look at it with Crandall in mind, there it is. Some faces, some postures, the general composition&#8230; hmmm.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The story itself is <strong>Standard\u2019s second try at cannibalism<\/strong>. After the flawed \u201cFeast Of The Ghouls\u201d in DARKNESS #13 two months earlier, they now go for sheer horror! No monsters, but a refined English gentleman under suspicion to attack his victims at night and picking them clean to the bare bones (in minutes!). Plausibility aside, this is a horror comic trying to entertain. And it is fun! What about the stories?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWerewolf\u201d is an okay horror tale sporting a red herring which comes as no surprise in autumn 1954. And marks the second installment of the short-lived Meskin\/Roussos collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thehorrorsofitall.blogspot.de\/2007\/08\/junk-mans-treasure.html\" target=\"_blank\">Junk-Man\u2019s Treasure<\/a>\u201d is a fast and dirty three-page shocker. Fair enough!<br \/>\n<em>See it posted on Karswell&#8217;s fantastic blog &#8222;The Horrors Of It All&#8220;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Must stories about family curses be always that foreseeable? \u201cThe Brannock Curse\u201d is, though I give it credit for choosing a nice ambience for the showdown: a skiing slope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Death Takes A Hand\u201d is another very nice job by Gene Fawcette, see it posted <a href=\"http:\/\/highest-standard.de\/stories\/when-death-takes-a-hand\/\" target=\"_blank\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The story \u201cDay Of Reckoning\u201d has no connection with \u201cDay Of Reckoning!\u201d by John Celardo in DARKNESS #5. Artwork is a puzzler. Experts believe it to be a joint effort by Mastroserio and Celardo (again). Just who did what is disputable. <em>Both are to be found in our &#8222;Stories&#8220; section.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The story itself is one of those partly enjoyable \u201cbaddies\u201d bursting with illogical and idiotic incidents.
